Need My Mudslide, Mr Kroger Buyer!

Have you ever been addicted?  Really addicted to a coffee creamer?

I have to admit I have found one that has me pouring the caffeine down the old gullet every day.  And to think, I don't really like coffee!

I stumbled across the White Chocolate Mudslide Coffee Creamer made by International Delight over the holidays when I was purchasing fun treats for the holiday guests.  Striving to be the perfect hostess, I poured myself a small cup of coffee and added some of the creamer.  After all, I should be willing to at least sample what I serve to my guests!

Well, one bottle of creamer and a pot of coffee later, I realized I was hooked.  This stuff is fabulous.  The taste of the white chocolate combined with the non-alcohol Irish Creme had us all scrambling back into the kitchen to refill our cups.  I went out and bought every bottle I could find at my local Kroger store.

This week, I went back in search of the Mudslide as my spouse is starting to growl that the last bottle is empty!  Eeeekkkkkkk.

Oh no!  The shelf is empty.  Starting to panic and watch the shortness of breath setting in, I spotted an employee.  Quick.  Run.

"Would you please check to see if there is more Mudslide in the back?  If not, when?"

"It's not coming back."

Shreeeeeeaaaaaaaakkkkkk.

"We have a national buyer now so we can only get what THEY say we like.  Go to the front and fill out a form so we can let the national buyer know what we like.  Besides, the new flavor just isn't selling."

What do you mean?  A national buyer who lives 'who knows where' and knows my intimate taste bud likes and dislikes?  What's next?  No more yellow grits?

Hmm, I wonder how the last drop of mudslide will taste in my diet soda? Or should I tear off the top and see if I can use a spatula to get it out?

With Dunkin' Donuts, Support for the Troops is in the Bag: Purchase Two One-Pound Bags of Dunkin' Donuts Coffee, and Dunkin' Donuts Franchisees Donate Another to the USO

/PRNewswire/ -- With Veterans Day approaching, Dunkin' Donuts, America's all-day, every day stop for coffee and baked goods, and the USO have brewed up an easy and meaningful way to show support for United States troops. Beginning today and continuing through November 14, for every purchase of two one-pound bags of Dunkin' Donuts' packaged coffee from any participating restaurant or online at www.DunkinDonuts.com, Dunkin' Donuts franchisees will donate an additional one-pound bag to the USO. Over the two-week program, Dunkin' Donuts will donate up to 100,000 pounds of coffee, which will be delivered to USO centers that serve millions of troops and their families.

The Dunkin' Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation, whose mission is to serve the basic needs of our communities through food for the hungry, safety and children's health, today also announced an $82,500 grant to support the USO's mission to provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to troops and their families.

The USO operates approximately 90 centers in the United States that provide programs and services for servicemen and women and their families. USO centers offer free Internet and e-mail access, prepaid international phone cards, entertainment and lounge areas, libraries, travel assistance, and will soon offer America's favorite coffee.

"Dunkin' Donuts has a long history of honoring America's servicemen and women, and we are proud to continue our tradition of supporting the troops through our new partnership with the USO," said John Costello, Chief Global Customer and Marketing Officer at Dunkin' Brands. "By donating a pound of Dunkin' Donuts coffee every time our guests purchase two pounds in our restaurants or online, we are making it easy for people to help keep our troops running, while joining us in celebrating the men and women who give selflessly to our country."

Dunkin' Donuts has donated more than 150,000 pounds of coffee to troops deployed overseas since May 2003. The company holds a monthly lottery to randomly select at least 50 United States military members to receive one case of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. During the holiday season, Dunkin' Brands corporate employees also send additional pounds of coffee to the troops.

"We greatly appreciate the commitment shown by Dunkin' Donuts and its franchisees to lift the spirits of troops and their families with a donation of their famous coffee," said Sloan Gibson, USO president. "With Veterans Day approaching, it's an excellent time to remember and support the sacrifices that our troops make for this country throughout the year."

Coffee gives a kick to spring party refreshments

(ARA) - Spring brings with it new reasons to celebrate. Warmer weather and longer days create the perfect atmosphere for a lively afternoon cocktail party or a weekend get-together with friends.

Add fresh flavor to your spring menus by incorporating an unusual ingredient like coffee into your snacks and drinks. This added detail will make your party elegant and memorable for all attendees.

"I like my party menus to be simple and enjoyable, which is why I keep Starbucks VIA Ready Brew on hand for a new twist on my favorite drinks and snacks," says Mindy Weiss, celebrity wedding planner and party enthusiast. "Coffee adds a unique flavor to tried-and-true party foods, and the convenience of Starbucks VIA allows me to enjoy my parties with my guests."

So get creative as you plan your next in-home soiree, or try one of these delicious recipes to add a little zing to your next get-together. And don't forget to visit Starbucks.com/VIA for recipe ideas for cupcakes to milk shakes to party mix.

Double Chocolate Cookies

Ingredients:
3/4 cup bittersweet chocolate, chopped
2 packets Starbucks VIA (R)
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

Directions:
Melt chocolate in a double-boiler over barely simmering water. Stir in the coffee. Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Add the melted chocolate to the butter mixture and stir well. Add vanilla and egg to the chocolate mixture. Stir in the dry ingredients. Fold in chocolate chips. Divide dough into 36 balls and place on a cookie sheet, but don't flatten. Bake at 325 F for about eight minutes. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for five minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack.

And the perfect drink to serve with these cookies is a glass of milk. But spice up your milk drink with this popular recipe from Spain and Mexico.

Horchata

Ingredients:
1 cup long-grain white rice
2 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
2 packets Starbucks VIA
2 1/2 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon zest of an orange

Directions:
Soak the rice in the water for a minimum of one hour. (Overnight works as well.) Mix rice, soaking water, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and coffee in a blender for two minutes. Strain into a pitcher and add milk. Chill completely (overnight is fine). When ready to serve, pour the mixture into a serving pitcher leaving the sediment behind. Stir in orange zest.

Try this recipe for a new twist on a coffee drink. It is popular in both Spain and Thailand.

Bombon

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
1 cup hot water
1 packet Starbucks VIA

Directions:
Carefully spoon two tablespoons of the condensed milk into the bottom of two glasses. Stir the coffee together with the hot water to dissolve. Carefully pour the coffee mixture into both glasses.

And if you're looking for something very unique, try a non-alcoholic version of sangria.

Breakfast Sangria

Ingredients:
1/4 cup sugar
3 cups cranberry juice
1 cup orange juice
1 cup blueberries
1 1/2 cups strawberries quartered
1 orange with zest removed and sliced into 1/4 inch wheels
2 packets Starbucks VIA
1 cup soda water

Directions:
Combine sugar, juices and fruit in a pitcher. Stir to dissolve sugar. Let chill for several hours. Before serving, dissolve coffee with a tablespoon of hot water in a large glass. Add a cup of the juice mixture and stir to fully combine. Add this coffee mixture back into the sangria pitcher and stir to combine. Right before serving, mix in the soda water. Combine the zest with an equal amount of sugar. Dip moistened rims of tall glasses into the orange-sugar mixture for a sparkling visual and flavor. Fill the glasses with sangria mixture.

The Caffeine Conundrum

(NAPSI)-Here's eye-opening news for many mothers-to-be: Experts at the American Dietetic Association address the question of whether pregnant women can safely drink coffee in a new book.

"Expect the Best: Your Guide to Healthy Eating Before, During, & After Pregnancy" (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.), by registered dietitian Elizabeth M. Ward, gives practical advice based on the latest scientific research about the relationship between diet and pregnancy.

"As a registered dietitian and a mother of three, I know how difficult it is to wade through all of the news regarding diet and pregnancy," Ward says.

Caffeine is a stimulant that slightly increases blood pressure and heart rate. Nevertheless, "most experts agree that a small amount of caffeine each day is safe during pregnancy," says Ward. "A more important issue is that drinking too many beverages with caffeine may crowd other more nutritious choices, such as milk and 100 percent juice, out of your diet, so choose wisely," Ward recommends.

The book provides a list of nearly 65 foods and their caffeine content, plus numerous recipes for healthful and tasty meals, drinks and snacks during pregnancy.

Here's a way to get the taste of a coffee shop beverage without all the caffeine and get some much-needed nutrients, such as protein and calcium, in the process.

Mocha Java Smoothie

Makes 1 serving

1 tablespoon warm water

1 teaspoon decaffeinated instant coffee granules

1 cup 1% low-fat milk

2 tablespoons fat-free chocolate syrup

1 ice cube

Dissolve coffee granules in the warm water, then place in a blender or food processor. Add milk, chocolate syrup and ice cube. Blend on high speed for 1 to 2 minutes, or until frothy. Pour into tall glass and drink immediately.
